Cultural & Design

We live in a visual information culture. Visuals are powerful persuasive medium to provide most of our information about the world.

40% of people respond more to visuals than to text
90% of information transmitted to the brain is visual
Visuals are processed 60,000x times faster in the brain than text

Visual are:
  • Everything that can be seen- wide definition, all-inclusive including nature (but nature is not culture) unless there's meaning & representation attached to it.
  • Everything produced or created by humans that can be seen- produced or created by humans for the purpose of visual representations that has functions, content and communicative purpose
Designers need to be aware of:
  1. Cultural nuances
  2. Symbolism
  3. Context
To create designs that are inclusive and resonate with diverse audiences.

Design significance
  • Able to identify the social, cultural & political sphere where the design elements reside.
  • By understanding the significance of the graphics in its cultural studies, philosophy, sociology and origin history.

FEEDBACK

Week 1
General Feedback
Briefing of our task.

Week 2
General Feedback
We need to make a lot of observations and then find a research target that will focus on a possible solution. Create a visual prototype, prototype our idea, and present it in a fun way using TikTok.
Specific Feedback
Sketches is there doesn't mean that you have to sketch it. The sketch can be in the form of the whole point we put. It just to demonstrate to you the idea of an ideation.

Week 3
General Feedback
Can add the stained glass into a windows pattern design.
Specific Feedback
Stained glass is for pretty places if we used it on coaster, it just turned cheap. The idea about Pc case is kind interesting can keep going with that. Besides, The research statement we wrote is actually the research question so need to change it.

Week 4
General Feedback
No class for week 4.

Week 5
General Feedback
Make sure keep all records and data properly organised.
Specific Feedback
For the TikTok video, can make a physical mock up for the stained glass Pc case.

Week 6
General Feedback
No class for week 6.

Week 7

REFELCTION

Experience:
For this module, I learned a lot of new things and understand more about everyday design is. In order to better present our work, we need to find a lot of text and visual materials, so I have a deeper understanding of this aspect. Besides, it is difficult to coordinate the schedules between team members, which I think is the most difficult problem our group has encountered. But fortunately, every team member cooperated well and everyone tried to find ways to use their time to complete this module.

Observations:
I observed that the benefits of division of labor and cooperation. It can help to save a lot of time and everyone can be assigned their own work. Besides, Stained glass crafts are very complex, and it actually takes a lot of effort to incorporate them into the design.

Findings:
Through this module, I fully understand my own shortcomings and the importance of teamwork. In addition, it has improved my time management skills and teamwork skills. It also helped me learn a lot of new things, which will be helpful for my future development.
