Anatomy and Character Sculpture - Projects

TABLE OF CENTENTS

INTRODUCTION

PROJECT 1: STYLIZED CHARACTER BLOCKOUT

For Project 1, we need to create a stylized character sketch and sculpt it. The character I decided to go with name Verdan, the character I design.

I used back the block out I created in Week 3 Exercise. We required to let the character assume the a-pose.

PROJECT 2: CHARACTER DETAILING AND TEXTURING

For Project 2, we are to continue with the previous sculpt from Project 1 to further enhancement. I sculpted the hair and clothing for the character and adjusted his hands

This costume was more difficult to sculpt than I thought because some of the branches were hanging in the air, so I had to create a new model. After trying, I found that some parts of the carving were difficult for me, and the carving effect was not very good, so the bottom of the clothes is different from the original design.

I think the hands were the hardest part and I spent the most time on them. The final result is not very good and lacks a lot of details.

FINAL PROJECT: POLISHING AND DYNAMIC POSTURE WITH PROPS

For Project 3, I started to adjust the character's pose and added weapons. Based on Mr Kannan's suggestions, the clothing was adjusted to deepen the texture and adjust the color to make it brighter. To prevent the overall tone from being too dark, a little green is added to the bottom of the clothing to create some contrast.

I first adjust the body, then adjust the clothes. For the hand adjustments, I first made adjustments directly on the model, but the result was strange and not what I expected, so I sculpted a new hand model.

FEEDBACK

Week 10: The details in the hair can be painted with a brush and the legs could be more detailed.

Week 12: Turn the upper body and chest a little more and adjust the hand position so it's holding the weapon.

Week 13: The overall is too dark, make it brighter. Can add some green to the bottom of the clothing and deepen the texture on clothing.

Week 14: Thicker upper lip.

REFLECTION

Sculpting a character from scratch is undoubtedly challenging, but watching a sphere slowly transform into a character is truly rewarding. When sculpting the body, I needed to research muscle textures and muscle orientation to ensure I could sculpt the character's muscles well. This process also deepened my understanding of muscles, as 3D models allow me to better understand how muscles change from different angles.

For this project, I feel that I still have a lot of shortcomings. There are many details in places, such as the face, hands and feet, which are not sculpted well. If you zoom in, you can find some defects. But overall, I am very happy with the final result of this character and I have learned a lot through this project.
